Our Photography Process

If photos are at the heart of compelling parent communications, then the facial expressions in those photos are the currency that melts hearts and connects.

Get in close of photo

Facial expressions are the currency of great photographs.
To capture facial expressions, small groups are better — one to three children rather than a crowd. And the bigger the frame, the more distant the subject, the less we capture of the facial expressions. And so get up close, waist up or even closer, rather than full body photos and far away. That way the facial expressions communicate the story of the picture.

Set frame your photo

We call this, work with what you’ve got. Finding geometrical shapes to frame your subject, a tree branch or object in the foreground with contrasting lines. Another option is a simple distant background to create depth of field. We love an uncluttered background, but that may not be an option for you.

Natural shots of photo

Have our images tell a story. Catch your subject in the thick of it so they’re natural and not posing for you. We’re catching them as they are. In action shots, close up pictures can capture the emotion going into the activity. However, it is also true that more distant shots help capture the environment and therefore context about the activity, telling a more complete story.

Capturing of images

Our camera settings and how we take pictures will definitely impact our workflow process. For example, if we take pictures in RAW format, our workflow process will be a little more complicated than if we were to shoot in JPEG. Why? Because RAW images require us to process them before they become usable for print or publishing. RAW files also take up a lot of space, which will certainly slow down our import, export and backup processes. If we shoot in JPEG format, we need to decide what color profile to use, what compression and image size to use, what white balance settings to use and more. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but we will have to decide what works best for us.

This step depends on how we handle the process of transferring images to our computer, because some software will do both in one step. For example, if we use Adobe Photoshop Lightroom or Apple Aperture, these programs will both copy images to our computer and import them into into a photo catalog at the same time, saving us a step.
The nice thing about using such software, is that we can customize/fine-tune the import process and tag images with certain keywords / metadata and even push some image-processing presets to each image upon import, which will save us even more time in our workflow.

Editing the photos

Now that we have organized photographs on our computer and within our favorite photo application, it is a good time to sit through and work on images. We might wonder if this step is necessary if picture is already good right out of the camera. Since there will always be images that might need some tweaking here and there to make them look better.
Therefore, our workflow depends on whether an image needs further work in Photoshop or not. If you are looking for some edit on photos, We will do.

Exporting the photos

Once we are done working on your images, the next step is to export those images for print or web publishing. Again, there are many variables to consider here. If you want us to printing an image, you have to find out which image formats.
If you are exporting your images for the web, like publishing your photographs on your blog, Flickr, etc., you have to decide what image dimensions to use during the export process and pick sRGB as the color space.
